FAQ > Infant Sign Language

What is a good age to start? The experts recommend starting around 6 months or before the baby is verbal. The age range in a class is usually 4 months through 17 months, but some parents take the class when the baby is younger than 6 months and start using the signs around 6 months.

Will this delay speech? Every time we sign with the baby we use the spoken word, so it actually accelerates spoken language. Every time the baby needs to use sign it takes decision making, planning and thinking; a baby that uses sign is getting a lot of mental stimulation. Using sign can motivate a baby to use spoken language just like crawling motivates a baby to walk.
