Like many other mothers, I am addicted to Facebook. Like many other mothers, I nursed my baby. Sometimes, with a precarious balance of baby and laptop, I fed my baby while feeding my addiction to Facebook. So if I could nurse my baby while on Facebook, why couldn’t my baby, breastfeeding, be on Facebook? Because according to the social networking site, it’s indecent, and pictures of a nursing baby are to be removed from Facebook. Despite a protest in which about 11,000 moms held a virtual “nurse-in,” uploading pictures of their breastfeeding babies to the site, Facebook has stood its ground, stating that the pictures violate their terms of use.
Um, Facebook, you have a status field, in which people write what they’re doing. Is a new nursing mother going to write “…is enjoying a hot cup of coffee in my office”, or “…is skiing the bowls at Breckinridge”, or “…is recovering from a night out and one too many cocktails”? No, she’s going to be nursing baby. Again. And again. Couldn’t a picture at once reflect that and offer a peek of the beloved baby herself?
